Hipsters!

Day twenty-six.

Proportions here are a little off here but these three are brick cut and painted then coated in resin to harden the outside. I would like to apply a bit more paint when I'm working on this stuff. I suppose not everything I've made would lend well to paint. I can't believe only four days left!

Acrylic inlay..

Day twenty-five.

I laminated acrylic into the center of wood. Nice clean retro look. I really have a soft spot for this red orange color.

Apple don't sue me!

Day twenty-four.

I heard Apple has a patent on "rectangular objects with rounded corners." Lame Apple is lame. Whatever.. bias aside, here is a rectangular pendant with rounded corners. Made from brick I snagged from a lot in Detroit. Cut thin and glued like the wood stuff I've been working on.

Twins! I win!

Day twenty-three.

Today I made a twin for the pendant I did on day seventeen. Friendship pendants. I also polished the inside of the tube on both. Nice and clean.

One more wood pendant..

Day twenty-two.

So, today was a weird day. I ended up putting a lot more effort into making a wood workbench top, than making something today.

But as promised I did deliver an object. Some more veneer. Only nine days left! Yikes! It's going by very quickly.

Pendant!

Day twenty-one.

Another pendant with laminated wood. This one has a rather sophisticated shape. Two rivets cross the piece horizontally and are exposed on either side.

I've got this neighbor..

Day twenty.

Bamboo found in the trash. made into a pendant.

So this neighbor, she is a grump. She loves her dog and that has got to be it. Never a wave when I pass, never a smile. She literally turns away when anyone passes. She chased her neighbor out of his house by getting a restraining order on the neighbor. She threw away a funny little dog bed today. So I decided I'd use the bamboo from the bed to make her dog some bling. I ended up making three of the above. I attached a key ring to each one. I'd like to give them to her to attach to her dog's collar. I also made three as I have no idea how these will hold up. Especially while hanging from her dog's collar.

Brick!

Day nineteen.

Brick found in Detroit and turned into a pendant.

Brick found in Detroit and turned into a pendant.

Brick! Another piece found in Detroit and sculpted by me. Trying to push the material. It is very brittle, to do anything complicated with it means breaking. I'll be trying to push this further.

I lied.. Don't judge..

Day eighteen.

Handmade pendant from wood veneer

I couldn't help myself. One more. Something different tomorrow.. I promise.

Tube hanger..

Day seventeen.

Laminated wood pendant. Handmade.

Laminated wood pendant. Another shot.

Soo.. There is a steel tube inserted into the laminated piece and filed down, then used as a hanger. The tubing is only 3/4 inch steel, to give reference to size. Tomorrow I'll hopefully break this wood streak. ha.

Cosby sweater..

Day sixteen.

Ok so today I'm adding some process shots here, per suggestion. A bunch of little strips of wood.. Cut thin and sanded.

wood veneer.

Wood is then glued and clamped for bit...

After dried, you're left with this mess..

Laminated wood. before trimming.

Cut down, shaped and sanded..

Shaped pendant

Holes for rivets are drilled. Rivets are then glued in and filed flush..

Sand, sand, sand and then sand a bit more.. Voila!

Rivets applied

wood pendant. cosby sweater!

This is made with pieces of laminated veneer cut into veneer. Gives it that Bill Cosby sweater look. I still need to put some finish on it. I have plans to apply Tung oil this evening. This veneer thing is working out pretty sweet.

Riveted lamination.

Day fifteen.
Halfway today! Woo hoo! Another laminated wood pendant. Four pieces of wood laminated together in a teardrop shape. The weight is on the top while the piece tapers toward the bottom. There are rivets that go through the piece to both sides. Very excited about this guy.

Lamination.

Day fourteen.
My first wood pendant.
I laminated a few pieces of wood together today. I've got a few more pieces in the works. I'm very excited with about these. The next couple will be a tad more complex.

Put a bird on it..

Day thirteen.
My attempt on (unlucky) day thirteen resulted in the turd you see here. I tried carving a brick into a bird. I failed. You might see a bird here if you weren't looking for one. Kinda the way you spot odd things in clouds. Ugh.. ohh well. Plan on seeing some laminated wood here in the next couple days.

Only an hour late..

Day twelve.
Puzzle box made of wood and rivets.
Band saw box!
So here is a puzzle box of sorts. There's only one pin that is removable, which when removed allows the box to be opened. I had made a bandsaw box when I was younger that worked very similar to this. I'd really love to put some wood inlay on this. There are definitely some details that need addressing on this little guy. I'll try to work on a new one over the next couple days and get it posted here.

Lathe-ring!

Day eleven.
A little more lathing today. A couple rings; one zebra wood and one acrylic.

Silhouette of a Skull

Day ten.
Steel stock tuned into a skull.
Today I bent a piece of 1inch iron and cut out a silhouette of a skull. On the back half, I cut a silhouette of the face. Neat!

More hammered steel.

Day nine.
So I'm really trying to see what I can do with this steel. How thin I can work it. How heat effects it. I really think the center bar alone might just look a bit nicer. Maybe even add some color?

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Brick Veneer.

Day eight.
Brick veneer. Slices of brick found in Detroit. I'd like to find a finish to put on these. Something thick that can be polished as well as give them some strength.

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Some might call it a Shiv...

Day seven.
Very rude handmade knife.
Materials found in Detroit.
Hammered steel blade. Sharpened and cuts awesomely.. I will definitely be doing this more. Knives and blades aren't really my thing (unless we're talking kitchen blades) but working metal is very fun.

Woodturning: A Classic.

Day six.
Today I turned my first bowl on a lathe! There is no finish on the wood; I'm not sure which kind I want to use yet. I'd really like to turn some things much larger. But I'll take my time getting there. I just snagged a couple of logs from a downed tree in the neighborhood. Once I get them chopped up I'll test my skills. I've really wanted to turn a lamp shade sometime soon. Maybe I can swing it with one of these logs.

Detroit Brick

Day five.
The main bar is tiny sliver of brick. It's face shows it's natural weathered texture. The ring was pulled from an old bicycle headset. The chrome was sanded through to expose the copper below. Stay tuned!!
